Who the service is for

Who needs to file a Self Assessment tax return?

Most employees pay tax through PAYE and never file a return. You’ll usually need one when some of your income isn’t taxed at source. These are the most common reasons:

Self-employed sole traders

Your gross trading income was more than £1,000 in the tax year.

Landlords

You received rental income above the £1,000 property allowance, or have expenses to claim.

Company directors

You take dividends or income that hasn’t been taxed through PAYE.

Higher earners

Your income is over £100,000, or you need to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge.

Untaxed income

You have savings, dividend or other income that needs to be declared.

Partners and capital gains

You’re a partner in a business, or you’ve sold assets such as shares or a second property.

Not sure whether you need to file? HMRC’s rules have other triggers too. Send us a message and we’ll check for you — free of charge.

How it works

Four steps to a filed tax return.

Most of it happens online, at times that suit you — and your accountant keeps you informed at every step.

01

Get in touch

Call, WhatsApp or book online. We’ll check what your return needs to cover and confirm the £150 fee.

02

Send your records securely

We send a short checklist for your situation. Upload documents through our secure portal or send photos.

03

We prepare and check your return

Your accountant prepares the return, reviews expenses and reliefs, and asks about anything unclear.

04

You approve, we submit

We walk you through the figures and file with HMRC once you’re happy. You receive confirmation and your tax calculation.

Key dates

Self Assessment deadlines

The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. A late online return usually triggers an automatic £100 penalty.

31 October

Deadline for paper tax returns.

31 January

Online return deadline, plus any tax owed and the first payment on account.

31 July

Second payment on account, if one applies.

01

Self Assessment for uber, private hire, minicab and taxi drivers

Whether you drive for Uber, Bolt, FREE NOW, a local minicab firm or as a licensed black cab and hackney carriage driver, you’re usually treated as self-employed. Platforms pay you after taking their service fee, and taxi work often mixes card payments, cash and account work — so a clear record of every fare and cash taking matters.

How we help

We reconcile each platform’s statement and your cash takings, work out whether mileage or actual costs gives the fairer result for your vehicle, and prepare your tax return for the fixed £150.

Common mistakes to watch

Whether an expense is allowable depends on your circumstances and HMRC’s rules. We’ll check each item with you.

02

Self Assessment for delivery drivers and couriers

Food delivery riders and parcel couriers are generally self-employed. Many work for more than one company across the year, which means several earnings statements to bring together.

How we help

We gather every platform’s figures into one return, check whether the trading allowance or real expenses suits you better, and file it for £150.

03

Self Assessment for landlords and property income

If you let out a property, you normally report rental profit on the property pages of your tax return. Letting through an agent, owning jointly or renting a room can each change how the figures are prepared.

How we help

We prepare your property figures carefully from your statements, apply the finance cost rules correctly and file your return for £150.

04

Self Assessment for iT consultants and IT contractors

Developers, testers and IT consultants who contract as sole traders report their profit through Self Assessment. Others work through umbrella companies or their own limited company — we’ll check which applies to you.

How we help

We prepare your return for the fixed £150 and, if your income grows, explain plainly how a limited company compares — see our limited company page.

05

Self Assessment for freelancers and creatives

Freelance work often means uneven income from many clients, some paying late or from overseas. Your return needs to capture income in the right tax year, not just when money lands.

How we help

We turn scattered invoices and platform payouts into an accurate return, and explain what you’re likely to owe next year so there are no surprises.

06

Self Assessment for high income earners

Once your income passes £100,000 your personal allowance starts to taper away, and if you or your partner claim Child Benefit and either of you earns over £60,000 the High Income Child Benefit Charge applies. Both quietly push your tax bill up, and both are only settled through Self Assessment.

How we help

We calculate whether your allowance has been tapered, work out any Child Benefit charge, and show you whether pension or Gift Aid planning could bring the bill down — all within the fixed £150.

07

Self Assessment for company directors

Directors are usually registered for Self Assessment because salary, dividends and benefits don’t all pass through PAYE. Your company handles Corporation Tax separately — your personal return brings together your salary, dividend income and anything else you receive.

How we help

We reconcile your salary, dividends and benefits, check your director’s loan position and file your personal return for the fixed £150 — while your company’s accounts and CT600 are handled separately.

08

Self Assessment for investors and capital gains

If you sold shares, cryptoassets, a buy-to-let or other chargeable assets, gains above the annual exemption are taxable. Disposal proceeds over £50,000 (or gains over £3,000) must be reported — crypto and share disposals often generate dozens of small transactions that all need to be accounted for.

How we help

We work through every disposal, apply share pooling and loss relief correctly, and prepare your return — including any 60-day property report — for the fixed £150.

09

Self Assessment for doctors and locum healthcare professionals

GPs, locums, consultants and other healthcare professionals often combine NHS payroll income, private practice earnings and locum fees from several organisations. Multiple payslips, pension contributions and professional fees make the return more involved — but your fee stays at £150.

How we help

We bring together your NHS payslips, locum earnings and private practice income, claim every allowable professional fee and file your return for the fixed £150.

10

Self Assessment for construction trades and CIS subcontractors

Whether you drive for Uber, Bolt, FREE NOW, a local minicab firm or as a licensed black cab and hackney carriage driver, you’re usually treated as self-employed. Platforms pay you after taking their service fee, and taxi work often mixes card payments, cash and account work — so a clear record of every fare and cash taking matters.

How we help

We check every CIS statement against HMRC’s records and prepare your return so tax already deducted is credited correctly — for the fixed £150.

11

Self Assessment for online sellers and e-commerce

Since January 2024, online marketplaces report sellers’ income to HMRC. Selling your own unwanted items isn’t usually trading, but buying to resell or making products to sell generally is.

How we help

We review your marketplace figures, establish whether you’re trading, and if you are, prepare your return for the fixed £150.

12

Self Assessment for consultants, coaches and other professionals

Management consultants, business coaches, personal trainers, therapists and tutors often start self-employment alongside a salaried job. Your return then brings employment and business income together.

How we help

We combine all your income sources into one return, explain the tax on each and file it for £150.
